“There is pleasure in those moments when we feel a growing sense of mastery in some small domain – mastery that is exercised through our bodies, with the use of tools” – The World Beyond Your Head
Five Seconds can change your life – So much focus in those moments. It’s a high in itself. Every jump I do off a Building or a Cliff (more specifically – Solid Slider Down Objects) I am expecting to get a 180. 99% of the time I don’t, and I fly away happy. Myself and a few close friends joke sometimes about how we prepare for the test so much in our heads that sometimes we are almost disappointed when we don’t get it.
I know that might sound a little fucked up but at the end of the day most BASE Jumpers are a little mentally unstable to begin with so I guess it’s fitting 😉
When the test does come, and you are able to react perfectly and get out of it, it’s an amazing feeling, and all the preparation pays off. When people ask me about those 5 seconds – The parachute opening to either the point of impact or to when you are flying away safe my response is always the same –
Those are the most exhilarating 5 seconds of my life! I remember them like they happen in slow motion. It amazes me how much information you can process in such a short period of time. In the same token I don’t ever really want the test. I want to have passed the test haha – No one likes failure.
The danger within jumping is always there and I believe you have to accept it as part of the game. If you don’t – get out. You are going to be tested from time to time, and if you are not prepared, and accepting of the outcomes, your in the wrong game.
