I had an awesome day of training today despite the fact I was pretty hungover. The usual excuses came into my head but I managed to beat them down and focus on what I needed to do.
The WODs for the Garage Games were released yesterday. At first glance I got really excited. On paper it looks like I will do pretty well.
I’ve decided to structure my week towards practicing the movements and working them into similar WODs just to get a feel for them.
3 rounds for time
10 Clean + Jerk @ 155
This pretty good. The first WOD on Saturday is gonna be tough. 155 for reps is no joke. In the above WOD I did the first set unbroken and the other 2 were 5+5. I’m not sure what way I will hit the sets on game day but I think I will try and do the first set unbroken to give myself a lead on the run. I’m gonna need as much of a lead as possible on the smaller guys.
This workout is really well thought out as it has 2 elements in complete contrast.
heavy power cleans for reps and a 600m hill run. It will be an interesting one.
rest 2 hours
3 mins to find a 1 rep max Overhead Squat
3 mins max muscle upe
1 point for every pound in the OHS and 5 points for every muscle up
OHS = 275lbs = 275pts
Muscle Ups = 13 = 65
Total points = 340
This is the actual 2nd WOD from Saturday. It’s a tricky one. Again I think it’s got good contrast for athletes but I don’t know if it’s worth going crazy heavy on the OHS then being tired for the MU’s or go semi heavy and try to bang out more muscle ups.
I did a very quick mobility warmup then did 5 reps with an empty bar, 2 @135lbs, 1 @225 then stripped the bar and waited 2 mins before starting the clock. I don’t know how they are going to work the warmups and weather or not we will have time to work up to heavy weights prior our heats so I wanted to try to hit it cold.
3,2,1, go, I put on 225 straight away an got it, 245 + got it, 275 + got it with 7 seconds left.
I tried to go on the min but I lost time adding the weight and I had to clean the bar off the floor each time as I’m not comfortable lowering anything over 200lbs onto my shoulders from Overhead.
I’m going to try and have the same strategy on Saturday with this one. The timing of when I have to do the floater WOD will play a big role on my OHS.
For the muscle ups I just did as many as I could while avoiding failure. I think I only did 4 in my first set then it was 3’s + 2’s towards the end. Again it will all depend how I feel.
After about 10mins or so I started thinking about the Overhead Squat and how I’ve wanted to do 300lbs for so long. I decided to go back out and give it an attempt.
The video below tells the rest.
I’m so fucking happy with this! I was on a high for the rest of the day. No doubt about it, 300lbs is fuckin HEAVY and its pretty scary having to hold it right over your head.
I’m psyched with this.
